What a Windows PC optimization agent should and should not touch

Most "PC optimizer" tools apply a long list of registry tweaks to every machine. Most of that list does nothing you can measure, and part of it breaks things: anti-cheat, Windows Defender, sleep, WSL. A good optimization agent does the opposite. It reads this PC first, proposes a short plan for what it found, asks once, saves a restore point, and can undo every step. This guide is the list we hold MinniTuner to.

Updated 2026-10-25

Read the machine before changing it#

The symptom decides the fix. Low average frame rate, stutter, input lag and a slow boot have different causes, and a generic list treats them the same. An agent should start by reading what is actually there: the GPU and its driver version, the power plan, what runs at startup, what is using the processor and memory while the machine is idle, recent crash logs, and the game’s own settings where it can see them.

That read is also the proof. Background load while idle, measured before and after the plan runs, is a number every PC can produce without launching a game or restarting. A frame-rate promise is not: it depends on the game, the scene and the settings, so a tool that quotes one for your machine before touching it is guessing.

Changes that are usually worth making#

  • The GPU driver, when it is old. The single most common fix for stutter and crashes in a new game.
  • The power plan, when a laptop or a desktop is sitting on a power-saving plan while gaming.
  • Startup apps and background services that a game does not need: launchers that auto-start, updaters, overlays you never use. Fewer things competing for the processor and memory.
  • Game-specific settings the agent can read: a frame cap set lower than the display, a fullscreen mode that adds latency, an upscaler left off.
  • Storage: a game on a slow drive loads slowly; the fix is moving it, not a registry key.

Changes that are mostly placebo#

A large share of what optimizer tools apply has no measurable effect on a current Windows 10 or 11 build: timer-resolution tricks, "ultimate performance" plans on a desktop already on high performance, most service-disabling lists, network "tweaks" for a wired connection, and clearing caches that Windows manages itself. They are not always harmful, but a tool that ships dozens of them is padding its count, not helping your frame rate. An agent should leave them out of the plan unless the read shows a reason.

Changes an agent must never make#

  • Turning off Windows Defender or its real-time protection, or telling it to skip your Downloads or Temp folders. That trades a frame or two for an open door.
  • Stopping anti-cheat or game-launcher services. The game stops working, or your account gets flagged.
  • Disabling virtualization features (VBS, Hyper-V) on a machine that uses WSL, Docker or Windows Sandbox. The "gain" is small and those tools stop starting.
  • Anything it cannot undo without telling you first. Some changes are one-way; an agent has to say so before you approve them, not after.

MinniTuner refuses these by design: Defender stays on, anti-cheat and launcher services are never turned off, and a custom fix that reaches outside the allowed set is refused. Anything that cannot be undone says so before you approve it.

One plan, one approval, one undo#

  1. You say what is wrong, or press Check my PC. The agent reads the machine.
  2. It proposes a plan: a short list of steps for what it found, each with its current value, its target and how it is undone. Nothing is pre-ticked.
  3. You approve the plan once. It saves a Windows restore point first.
  4. Each step is checked right before it runs, applied one at a time and logged.
  5. Afterwards it shows the before and after: background load while idle, processes, services, memory.
  6. Undo replays the log in reverse. One click, any time.

Every change runs through PowerShell scripts that are checked for tampering each time the app starts, so what applies is what was reviewed.

What is free and what is paid#

The checkup, chat with the agent on free models, plans over the Basic tier and undo are free, and stay free. MinniTuner Pro is $19.99 one time for 3 PCs with lifetime updates: the Advanced FPS tier for gaming rigs, custom fixes written for your PC, diagnostics and the before-and-after measurement. MinniTuner is in open beta; the product page has the current build and the download.
